Suðuroy is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands. Many people come to Suðuroy to enjoy the picturesque villages of Sandvík, Famjin, and Sumba, as well as to experiencing outstanding views to and from the mountains, hiking trips to caves and valleys. The highest mountain here is 610 metres. The mountain is called Gluggarnir.
The village of Famjin is looking directly out to the harsh North Atlantic Ocean. Famjin is partly protected by a stone reef, which becomes visible at low tide. The village is surrounded by the beautiful natural scenery of the highest mountains, Gluggarnir, on Suðuroy. There are several inland lakes and waterfalls.
This is the most southernly point in the Faroe Islands. You will find Akraberg on Suðuroy island. Akraberg lies 2 kilometres away from the village Sumba. There are only a couple of houses in Akraberg and they have mostly been used to accommodate the lighthouse keeper in older days.
There is a lighthouse at Akraberg which still guides sea traffic in this part of the Faroe Islands. No people live at Akreberg throughout the year but there are a couple of summerhouses on this southernmost spot in the Faroe Islands.
There is a rich birdlife at Akraberg as well as skerries that are covered in surf especially during the winter month. You will see merely ocean from Akraberg and no other islands.
When you get to Akreberg, you are able to park your car and walk around in the area. There are fences along the cliff's edge so it is safe to bring children to this attraction.
The village Sumba is known for its many colourful houses. This most southernly village in the Faroe Islands on the island Suðuroy lies in stunning surroundings with a great panoramic ocean view.
You will find the Akraberg lighthouse two kilometres from Sumba. You can drive all the way to Akraberg from Sumba on a narrow.
