Bike to Kirkjubøur

Join this classic road cycling tour to the turf-roofed village of Kirkjubøur. This bicycling trip will take you to the historical centre of the Faroe Islands and home to the ruins of the largest cathedral on the islands. You will bike through Tórshavn city centre and past the district of Norðasta Horn and across the mountain pass Velbastaðháls to Kirkjubø. When you get to Velbastaðháls, you will be some 190 metres above sea level which is the highest point on this tour.  In Kirkjubøur you will visit the Magnus Cathedral and Olav church and Kirkjubøargarður (the King's farmhouse). The farmhouse dates back to the 11th century and the stories goes that the house was sailed from Norway to the Faroe Islands by Viking ships.   Whilst in Kirkjubøur, you can enjoy a splendid view of the small Kikjubøur islet and the neighbouring islands Sandoy, Hestur, Koltur, and Vágar. You will have the chance to walk between the turf houses in the village most of them painted black and with red windowsill.  On your return to Tórshavn, you will bike through the town of Velbastaður where the houses cling to the steep slopes.
