Winter Fishing Trip in Árnafjørður

This is an authentic winter fishing experience! We sail in a traditional Faroese boat - the utmost of Faroese handicraft. This Faroese boat was the lifeline of the people that settled the beautiful villages that you see along the coastline. With this boat type people discovered rich fishing grounds. Now you can follow in their footsteps.  It is a Faroese tradition to fish for the household in the winter time. According to an old Faroese adage the quality of the fish is best in the months that have an "R" in them - meaning September until April. This time of year the weather is perfect for wind-drying - an ancient conserving method. Winter is also the best time for making fish cakes! You sail out from the Árnafjørður marina and follow the eastern seashore by Mjóvin. The fiord Árnafjørður is about 4 nautical. The surrounding high mountains shelter from north-westerly winds. Sailing close to the shore you see the varied landscape with ravines and grottoes. Keep your eyes open to seals as they have this area as their natural habitat. Up on the steep slopes you see the semi-wild grazing sheep. You procede to Bergsmunnin and see the view east towards the island of Svínoy. Sailing further along this spectacular coastline you near “Bergið”. Of the coast by Bergið you cast your fishing line! Typical fish in area are Atlantic cod, Haddock and Saithe, but sometimes you may catch Ling, Tusk and Redfish.  At a certain location you will try to catch the beautiful “Reyðfiskur” – a variation of the Atlantic Cod that assumes the red colours of it’s seaweed habitat. Weather permitting you may cross the fiord towards Lishøvdi and cast your fishing line there. This is an authentic fishing experience! You sail in a traditional Faroese boat – the utmost of Faroese handicraft. No place more than in Eiði has people’s existance historically so depended upon the traditional Faroese boat. They discovered rich fishing grounds and nearby the spawning area of the Faroese Atlantic cod. Now you can follow in their footsteps. You set out from the small boat marina of Eiði in the north of Eysturoy. You sail by the western shore of the Eiðiskollur peninsula. The area is fenced by stunning natural scenery. Weather permitting you sail towards “Risin and Kellingin” (The Giant and the Hag). In this stunning amphitheatre you will try your luck at fishing. Typical fish in this area are Atlantic Cod and Haddock but you may also encounter fish dwelling higher in the water column such as Saithe and Mackerel. When weather is not optimal for fishing close to the “Risin and Kellingin” you will sail closer to the bay of Tjørnuvík on the Streymoy side of the golf “Eiðisflógvi”. There are local areas with groundfish such as Whiting, and the “Reyðfiskur”, a colourful variation of the Atlantic cod that assumes the colours of it's seaweed habitat. When you have found a good fishing spot remember to take "ýti” (a Faroese word for landmarks), so that you can find your spot again! Now you can follow in their footsteps. You sail from the pier of the Sørvágur marina on Vágar. The fiord Sørvágsfjørður is absolutely beautiful. When you sail out through the fiord you will see spectacular landscapes. You sail close to the the beautiful village of Bøur and procede along the northern shore by Bíggjarskorð. Weather permitting you will approach Gásadalur and sail to the famous waterfall “Múlafossur”. To the south you will see the magnificient islet Tindhólmur and the seastacks Drangarnir. If weather permits you will sail closer to these seastacks and cast your fishing line close by. In this scenic natural amphitheatre we turn off the engine. To the sounds of only the sea and the birds you try your fishing luck! There are several good fishing areas. Now you can follow in their footsteps. You sail from the marina north of the dam in Hvannasund on Viðoy. You sail along the eastern coastline of Viðoy towards Viðareiði. You see spectacular gorges and grottoes along the shore – perfect for photography. You are likely to see seabirds such as fulmar, black guillemot, arctic tern and puffins on your path. Of the coast by Viðareiði between Viðoy and Borðoy you cast your fishing line. With high mountains to both sides this is a scenic natural amphitheatre. The area is known for good fishing and there are several interesting fishing spots to check out depending on weather and sea currents. While some areas are known for Atlantic Cod there are other where you will seek to catch Haddock and Whiting. Fishing tour in Torshavn

Join a Faroese fisherman along the Streymoy coast for an authentic Faroese experience This is the perfect tour if you’d like to try your hand at fishing while enjoying amazing panoramic scenery. The trip departs from Argir, and goes around Nólsoyarfjørður, between Tórshavn and Nolsoy Island. There are several good fishing areas to choose from, dependant on wind direction and ocean currents. You will typically catch cod, haddock and maybe pollock. We think there is really nothing more serene than standing on deck, waiting for a fish to bite while enjoying the far-reaching scenic views and fresh sea air. You will enjoy the views of the capital of the Faroe Islands - Tórshavn, Nolsoy island and beyond. You may even be lucky enough to spot some seals and porpoises.
