Syðradalur is the southernmost settlement on Kalsoy Island in the northern part of the remote Faroe Islands. A secluded small hamlet home to only few houses. This settlement holds the only ferry harbour on the island. The ferry to Syðradalur departs from Klaksvík on Borðoy Island.
There are actually two settlements names Syðradalur in the Faroe Islands. The other one is located on Streymoy Island closer to the capital, Tórshavn.
The only way to get to this place is by boat. Take the Kalsoy Island ferry with several daily departures.
Syðradalur is the port of arrival for everyone wanting to explore the top attraction on Kalsoy Island, the Seal Woman statue Kópakonan in the settlement Mikladalur.
From Syðradalur to the Seal Woman Statue on Kalsoy Island
Once you have disembarked the ferry from Klaksvík on Borðoy Island to the harbour on Kalsoy Island, this is how you go about getting to Mikladalur.
The Faroe Islands are known for its many tunnels. Kalsoy Island has four tunnels. Before you get to Mikladalur, you will pass Húsar. Now, you will drive through three tunnels just after Húsar before you get to Mikladalur.
The island is often called “the flute” due to its long, narrow shape and tunnel-pierced mountains. You can either take the bus service on Kalsoy Island or bring your car on the ferry from Klaksvík.
Once you arrive in Mikladalur, reaching the famous Seal Woman statue requires only a short but steep walk. From the centre of the settlement, follow the signs marked “Kópakonan”. Take the concrete stairs leading down toward the ocean. The statue stands on a rock by the sea with a dramatic backdrop combining the steep Kunoy Island with views of the North Atlantic Ocean.
